5 Simple Home Decorating Do’s and Don’ts for Beginners

JA Horne Starlight • Nov 22, 2022

While your home should be a reflection of you and your personality, there are certain principles that should be followed to help you decorate with success.

Whether you’re starting from scratch or simply looking to refresh an existing room, here are some simple home decorating do’s and don’ts to be aware of.

1. Don’t: Have Too Much Clutter

While we all have objects we like to display in our home, either photos of our loved ones or items from our travels, when combined with gifts or your latest shopping spree, your home can become overcluttered and lacking in space. Over cluttering your home with furniture or accessories can create a crowded and messy environment.

The secret is to limit the number of items you have on show at one time. You can always swap around these items over time but never have all of them out at once. When your items aren’t being shown, store them away with storage solutions like storage boxes, under-bed boxes, hooks etc.

2. Do: Invest in Fitted Furniture

If you are an interior design beginner or simply looking for ways to maximise the space in your home, fitted furniture is the best solution to optimise your space and create a home that feels put together.

Fitted furniture is perfectly tailored to your home, using exact measurements of your space to ensure there are no awkward leftover bits of space that go unused.

3. Don’t: Use White Decor If You Have Kids or Pets

While white can look modern and clean, it won’t for long if you have young children or pets.

It’s important to be practical as well as creative when choosing the interior design of your home, so refrain from using a colour palette that will quickly get ruined or require lots of maintenance.

4. Do: Mix Old and New

Even if you like the look of all-new furniture, add something else that's slightly aged to the space, such as a vintage clock, antique candlesticks or a weathered timber shelf. It stops the room from feeling too uniform.

5. Don’t: Forget to Make it Your Own

While following tips and tricks online provide you with a great starting point when giving your home a refresh, it is important to make sure you are creating a home which is personal to you.

Your home should be a place where you can unwind and relax in, so add things that make you feel most comfortable.
